چکیده

We present a phase-resolved spectroscopic study of the secondary star in the cat-aclysmic variable U Gem. We use our data to measure the radial velocity semi-amplitude, systemic velocity and rotational velocity of the secondary star. Combining this with literature data allows us to determine masses and radii for both the secondary star and white dwarf which are independent of any assumptions about their structure. We use these to compare their properties with those of field stars and find that both components follow field mass-radius relationships. The secondary star has the mass, radius, luminosity and photometric temperature of an M2 star, but a spec-troscopic temperature of M4. The latter may well be due to a high metallicity. There is a troubling inconsistency between the radius of the white dwarf inferred from its gravitational redshift and inclination and that inferred from its temperature, flux, and astrometric distance. We find that there are two fundamental limits to the accuracy of the parameters we can derive. First the radial velocity curve of the secondary star deviates from a sinusoid, in part because of its asphericity (which can be modelled) and in part because the line flux is not evenly distributed over its surface. Second we cannot be certain which spectral type is the best match for the lines of the secondary star, and the derived rotational velocity is a function of the spectral type of the template star used.

LINEAR PULSATION CHARACTERISTICS OF MIRA VARIABLE STARS

The linear adiabatic pulsation-periods of Mira variable stars have been derived. Approximately 2701[1]models were calculated for M = 0.7 MΘ to 2 MΘ stars with radii from 180 RΘ to 340 RΘ and luminosities from 2800 LΘ to 10,000 LΘ. The chemical composition of all models is (X,Z) = (0.7,0.02). From the result of this study, linear relations on Luminosity-Period-Mass relationship and luminosity-pe...

The radial profiles of the different mass components in galaxy clusters

Aims. To derive the mass profiles of the different luminous and dark components in clusters, separately. Methods. The cluster mass profile is determined by using the Jeans equation applied to the projected phase-space distribution of about 3000 galaxies members of 59 nearby clusters from the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey. The baryonic and subhaloes mass components are determined from the gala...

Monitoring the occurrence of frost through an analysis of air masses in south west basins of Iran

Frost is one of the atmospheric phenomena which seriously threaten crop production. It also causes numerousaccidents in mountainous roads. In this research the Spatial Synoptic Classification SSC method was employed toclassify the type of air masses. For the classification, such meteorological data as: temperature, dew point, mean sealevel pressure, cloudiness, direction and speed of wind were ...

The Effect of Magnet Width and Iron Core Relative Permeability on Iron Pole Radii Ratio in Spoke-Type Permanent-Magnet Machine: An Analytical, Numerical and Experimental Study

In this paper, we present a mathematical model for determining the optimal radius of the iron pole shape in spoke-type permanent-magnet (PM) machines (STPMM) in order to minimize the pulsating torque components. The proposed method is based on the formal resolution of the Laplace’s and Poisson’s equations in a Cartesian pseudo-coordinate system with respect to the relative permeability effect o...

On black hole masses, radio-loudness and bulge luminosities of Seyfert galaxies

We estimated black hole masses for 9 Seyfert 1 and 13 Seyfert 2 galaxies in the Palomar and CfA bright Seyfert samples using the tight correlation between black hole mass and bulge velocity dispersion. Combining other 13 Seyfert 1s and 2 Seyfert 2s in these samples but with black hole masses measured recently by reverberation mapping and stellar/gas dynamics, we studied the correlations of blac...
